Welcome to Graniti Murales: A vision by Salvatore and Karin

In 2014, we, Salvatore and Karin, began an ambitious journey to breathe new life into our beloved village of Graniti. Nestled in the hills of Sicily, away from the busy tourist areas of the coast, Graniti was rich in history and charm, yet lacked cultural attractions that bring people together and inspire creativity. We dreamed of transforming our small, quiet village into a living canvas that would not only attract visitors, but also foster a strong sense of community.

Why Murals?

For us, art always means freedom – the freedom to express, explore and break away from convention. We were inspired by the MURALES, which originated in South America as powerful tools of political protest. These murals represented more than just art; they were symbols of social change, dialogue and cultural identity. We saw them as the perfect medium to realize our vision – a way to bring color, diversity and conversation to the walls of Graniti while fostering the spirit of international collaboration.

Building a global village

With brush in hand and a mission in our hearts, we began inviting artists from all over the world to participate in our project. What started as a small initiative is now a remarkable collection of murals spread across the entire village. Each painting tells a story, each brushstroke adds a new chapter to Graniti’s cultural narrative. These works of art have transformed our village into an open-air gallery that attracts visitors who are not only captivated by the beauty of the murals, but also moved by the stories they tell.

Artspace: Where community meets creativity

But our vision didn’t end with the murals. We wanted to create a space where the community could come together, share and be creative. This led to the creation of the “Artspace”, a community center in a previously abandoned building. Here, villagers of all ages gather to bake bread in a traditional wood-fired oven, learn crafts such as crochet and knitting, and work on projects that beautify and enrich our environment. The Artspace has become the heart of our village, where creativity flows freely and everyone has their place.

Adapt and grow

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected challenges and limited our ability to gather and work together. But we did not let this discourage us. We took the opportunity to plan for the future and acquired an old oil mill in the center of Graniti. This historic building is now being transformed into a sustainable exhibition hall – MOGRAMU (MOstra permanente di GRAniti MUrales). Once completed, it will house our entire collection of mural designs, host lectures and serve as a vibrant space for cultural events. With its striking glass roof, MOGRAMU will be a symbol of our resilience and commitment to keeping the spirit of Graniti alive and vibrant.
